Recognizing that half of Cleveland's Jews were unaffiliated following World War II, the Union of American Hebrew Congregations asked Cleveland native Rabbi Alan S. Green to form a congregation specifically to attract the unaffiliated. Creating an atmosphere of participation in religious services, Emanu El had a membership of 500 families by the end of its second year. Rabbi Green oversaw the growth of the congregation to approximately 650 families. He was succeeded in 1977 by Rabbi Daniel A. Roberts. Emanu El's activities include a men's club, a sisterhood, a couple's club, several youth groups, and the operation of a religious school. The collection consists of constitutions, bylaws, minutes, financial reports, correspondence, memos, newspaper clippings, Rabbi Green's sermons, writings and files, religious school materials, and blueprints.
